Imbolc Ritual

Imbolc; (pronounced iMOLK), is the Gaelic festival that marked the beginning of Spring. It is celebrated on February 1 or 2; half-way between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox, in the Northern Hemisphere. (It is usually celebrated on August 1 or 2 in the Southern Hemisphere to compensate for the shift in the seasons.)

The holiday is a festival of home and hearth as well as a celebration of the lengthening days and the early signs of Spring’s arrival. Celebrations include hearth fires, special foods, divination, watching for omens-primarily weather omens, in addition to the candles or bonfire, (if weather permits). These can be combined with many different traditional activities depending on the path that you follow.

Imbolc is one of eight Sabbat festivals throughout the Wheel Year. It is a ritual of purification so the lighting of candles and other fires are an integral part of the celebration. The lighting of candles and/or fires also represent the return of warmth to the Earth as well as the increasing power of the Sun over the coming months.

(Arrange White candle on left side of cauldron and Green candle on right side)

Mother Earth stirs from Her long slumber. The fields and forests hear Her whisper and awaken. The creatures of Her realms answer Her summons. Everything waits in anticipation for spring.

(Tap altar three times with wand)

This is the festival of the Maiden who gives to all the breath of life. This is a time of waxing light and receding darkness. This is a season of purification, a renewal of life. At this time and in this place between the worlds, I come into the presence of the Lady and Lord that I may gain wise and truthful counsel.

(Tap altar three times with wand)

O, Ancient Ones, I know my life-path is within Your keeping. Only with Your help and guidance can I hope to avoid any pitfalls and reach my destination safely.

(Light white candle)

I salute the Glorious Maiden, preparer of new life out of darkness. This is Her season of the year-wheel. It is when She spreads Her blessing over the land.

Blessed Be!

(Light green candle)

Behold, the Lord of the Forests caresses the dreaming Earth. As there is a renewal within the plants and animals, so should there be a renewal in my life also.

Blessed Be!

(Lift wine chalice)

Make my life fertile with insight, good health, prosperity and magical power.

Honor Old Gods!

Merry meet, merry part, merry meet again.

Blessed Be!

(Time for celebration, meditation, divination, dancing and feasting)
